Video Release of MPD Officer Involved Shooting
MILWAUKEE, WI— On Monday, January 6, 2025, at approximately 9:37 p.m., Milwaukee Police Department officers were on the 2500 block of South 7th Street seeking a subject wanted for sexual assault of a child and child enticement.
The officers were informed that the suspect was in a residence and made contact with him. While communicating with the suspect, the suspect pulled out a firearm. A struggle ensued between two officers and the suspect over the firearm. One officer discharged his firearm subsequently striking the suspect.
The suspect, a 19-year-old male, was arrested and transported to a local hospital for treatment of non-fatal injuries. His firearm was recovered. Criminal charges were issued by the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office on January 10, 2025, against the suspect.
The officer that discharged his firearm is a 35-year-old male with over 8 years of service. He was placed on administrative duty as is routine in officer involved shootings. This incident, as with all critical incidents, will be subject to an administrative review in accordance with department policy to ensure adherence to department training, policies, procedures, and law enforcement best practices.
The Milwaukee Police Homicide Unit investigated this incident.
The Milwaukee Police Department’s Video Release Policy Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) 575, establishes criteria for when video evidence that captures officer-involved incidents that result in death or great bodily harm will be released to the public. This policy is intended to balance important interests, including the public’s interest in transparency and police accountability, the necessity of preserving the integrity of criminal and administrative investigations, and the privacy interests of individuals depicted in such videos (including victims, witnesses, bystanders, and the individuals against whom force is used). This policy creates a presumption of release. It is our goal to release video in officer involved incidents according to SOP 575 within 15 days of the incident.
