MILWAUKEE – Major League Baseball today announced that Freddy Peralta was named the Brewers 2024 nominee for the Roberto Clemente Award, presented by Capital One, one of baseball’s most prestigious individual honors acknowledging community and philanthropic commitment. This is Peralta’s first time receiving the honor.

The Roberto Clemente Award, presented by Capital One, is the annual recognition of a player from each MLB Club who best represents the game of baseball through extraordinary character, community involvement, philanthropy and positive contributions, both on and off the field. As part of the annual program, each MLB Club nominates one player to be considered for the league-wide Award in tribute to Clemente’s achievements and character.

Sunday, September 15, marks the 23rd annual Roberto Clemente Day presented by Capital One, which was established by Major League Baseball to honor Clemente’s legacy and to formally acknowledge Club nominees of the Roberto Clemente Award. As part of the league-wide celebration, the Roberto Clemente Day logo will appear on the bases and official dugout lineup cards and a customized tribute video to Roberto will be shown in all MLB ballparks as well as on MLB Network, MLB.com, Club sites and MLB Social Media Platforms.

That evening, as the Brewers take on the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field, Brewers players and coaching staff will wear a #21 tribute patch. In addition, Peralta will wear #21 on his uniform, as will Willy Adames, Jackson Chourio, Christian Correa, Néstor Corredor, William Contreras, Daniel de Mondesert, Andruw Monasterio, Frankie Montas, Enoli Paredes, Joel Payamps, Elvis Peguero, Gary Sánchez and Christian Yelich.

On Monday, September 16, the Brewers will honor Peralta as the Roberto Clemente Award nominee and gift him a nominee award when the Crew takes on the Phillies. In addition, three winners of the Roberto Clemente art contest will be recognized and throw first pitches.

“Roberto Clemente’s legacy of leadership and service is unparalleled and set the standard for others. I am honored to be nominated for such a prestigious award,” said Peralta, “I could not have achieved what I have without the support from my friends, family, team, and the Milwaukee community.”

The league-wide winner of the Roberto Clemente Award presented by Capital One will be announced at the 2024 World Series, following selection by a blue-ribbon panel. This panel includes representatives from the Commissioner’s Office, Capital One, MLB-affiliated networks (MLB Network, FOX Sports, ESPN and TBS), MLB.com, the National Baseball Hall of Fame, as well as Roberto’s children, Enrique, Luis and Roberto Clemente, Jr. Beginning today, fans can vote for the Roberto Clemente Award presented by Capital One via MLBTogether.com/clementeaward (in both English and Spanish). The site, which features bios of each nominee, allows fans to vote through the end of the season on Sunday, September 29th. The winner of the fan vote will count as one vote among those cast by the blue-ribbon panel.

The concept of honoring Major League players for their philanthropic work was created in 1971 as the “Commissioner’s Award.” The recognition was renamed to the “Roberto Clemente Award” in 1973 in honor of the Hall of Famer and 15-time All-Star who died in a plane crash on New Year’s Eve 1972 while attempting to deliver supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua.

A Dominican Republic native, Freddy has been committed to making an impact within the Latin community through his exceptional character, dedication to community service and unwavering commitment to philanthropy.

Freddy has been instrumental in spearheading a scholarship fund initiative, in collaboration with other Latin players and the Brewers Community Foundation, in support of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC). This effort has successfully raised more than $150,000, providing vital scholarships to deserving Latin students. Through his leadership and active involvement, Freddy has not only helped bridge the financial gap for many young students but has also inspired home and ambition within the community.

In addition to his work with LULAC, Freddy has been a constant presence in various community outreach programs, focusing on youth development and education. His passion for giving back is exemplified through his visits to community-based organizations and participating in community events. This year, Freddy is co-chairing the Hispanic Professionals of Greater Milwaukee signature gala in support of their mission to increase economic prosperity and grow Latino influence in Wisconsin.

Beyond his philanthropic work, Peralta’s leadership plays a crucial role as a mentor to his fellow Latin players on the Milwaukee Brewers team by guiding younger players and helping them navigate the challenges of professional baseball while staying connected to their cultural roots. Freddy’s mentorship goes beyond the technical aspects of the game; he offers advice on handling the pressures of the sport, maintaining a strong work ethic, and giving back to their communities. His leadership has fostered a sense of pride among the Latin players, encouraging them to use their platform for a positive change.

His mentorship extends past the field as Freddy also consistently engages with scholarship recipients, offering mentorship and encouragement. He is committed to ensuring that these students have the resources and guidance they need to succeed.
