Exhibit honoring female Council members comes to City Hall

This year’s Girls’ Day @ City Hall (Wednesday, March 20) included an art exhibit paying tribute to Milwaukee’s history of female Common Council members. Throughout the city’s history, 20 women have served on Milwaukee’s Common Council with the first being Vel R. Phillips who took office in 1956. The exhibit titled, “Rooted in Service” is a pictorial history of all the women who have held seats on the Common Council from Vel Phillips through today.

Alderwoman Milele A. Coggs, who created and hosts the annual Girls’ Day event, believes the exhibit was a welcome addition for both Girls’ Day and Women’s History Month.

“Every year the tagline for Girls’ Day is inspiring leadership rooted in service. I always think it is important for us as women to remember and acknowledge our roots and those who came before us and allow us to do what we do today. Myself and all my female colleagues past, present, and future stand on the shoulders of Vel Phillips, and those who came before us, and I thought it was appropriate that we pay homage to all of the twenty magnificent women who have proudly served this city.”

The “Rooted in Service” exhibit was designed by Alta Smith Head (designer) of Flurish Design and Nicole Cummings (Groce) of HGA Architects & Engineers, and can be found in the first floor rotunda of City Hall, 200 E. Wells St., through the remainder of March.
