Vacant lots soon to be building sites for new homes

Several city-owned vacant lots will be transformed during the next two years by Habitat for Humanity, bringing new single-family homes to the Harambee neighborhood in the 6^th Aldermanic District.

Alderwoman Milele A. Coggs said Common Council action on Tuesday (October 31) approved the sale of the vacant lots to Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity, paving the way for the in-fill new home building to move forward.

Milwaukee Habitat for Humanity, Inc.  has worked with the Department of City Development (DCD) and Alderwoman Coggs to identify vacant lots in the Harambee neighborhood, and several lots have been selected because they were deemed to be appropriate locations for new home construction by DCD.

Alderwoman Coggs said Habitat will build the affordable new-construction homes during its 2024-2026 home building season, and then the homes will be sold to owner-occupant buyers.

“The dream of home ownership will come true for buyers who meet the financing guidelines and who are willing to put forth sweat equity, as has been the norm on Habitat for Humanity projects,” she said. “I am very pleased to have this initiative coming to the 6^th District and Harambee, and I want to thank Habitat and DCD for their work and due diligence in selecting the sites for these new homes.”
