MTEA Files Ethics Complaint Against MPS Board Director Aisha Carr for Chronic Campaign Finance Violations

MILWAUKEE – Milwaukee Teachers’ Education Association (MTEA) President Amy Mizialko filed a complaint yesterday with the Wisconsin Ethics Commission (WEC) against MPS Board Director Aisha Carr for routine late filing of campaign finance reports as well as failure to file campaign finance reports.

“The public deserves to know who is funding the campaigns of candidates and elected officials,” said Mizialko. “That is why campaign finance reporting deadlines are codified in state law.”

According to the Milwaukee Election Commission website, Carr has either failed to file or filed late on five of the six required reports since announcing her candidacy for school board two years ago. In addition to a report that was due this week on Tuesday, January 17, Carr failed to file a 2022 July Continuing Report and was late on three others.

Carr, who was first elected in April 2021, is employed by City Forward Collective, a  private charter school group that works to take funding from public schools and redirect it to private schools. She was previously a Board member of City Forward Collective. Carr is currently supporting a slate of school board candidates, who she recruited to run, who share her ideals.

“It is deeply troubling that any elected official would exhibit such routine disregard for the public’s right to transparency,” said Mizialko. “It is even more concerning that a public school board member with the clear conflict of interest of working for a group that works to harm public schools would withhold campaign finance records from the public.”

Wisconsin Ethics Commission staff will review the complaint in the coming months and determine whether to present it to the Commission at a future meeting.

“We look forward to a thorough review by WEC and urge the commission to protect the rights of MPS students, staff, families and the community to know who is funding the campaigns of the officials sworn to serve them,” said Mizialko. “The commission must make clear that routine neglect of campaign finance laws will be taken seriously.”
