Majority Leader Fitzgerald Reacts to Evers’ Mask Mandate
[Madison, WI] — Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald released the following statement in response to Governor Evers’ recently introduced mask mandate:
“Masks are fine, but we don’t need statewide mandates telling us what to do. Many people are wearing masks already. Municipalities have been making the decisions themselves on what best fits their regions. I still do not support mandating mask wearing statewide.
“I certainly think the way that the governor has written this order may have opened him up to legal challenges. I’m also gauging the interest of my caucus when it comes to voting down the order – the Legislature should be reconvening to look at this.
“Good luck enforcing this without local support. Municipalities and counties are going to be tasked with deciding how to best handle this issue. Certainly, the last thing our police need to be doing right now is serving as part of the mask patrol.”
Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald (R-Juneau) represents the 13th Senate District, which covers portions of Dodge, Jefferson, Waukesha, Washington, Dane, and Columbia counties.

Um, apparently "we" do / did. Like it or not, the first "stay home" order and this "mask order" reinforce the seriousness for those on the line. It won't do anything except stoke anger in a particular crowd, but if it moves the needle on the population, then that's a good thing. Unfortunately, too many in our current government — can't say leadership — seem so overidden by selfishness, votes, and power that they can't even recognize the benefits.
so sick of fitzgerald and his arrogant self. one would think he would support the health and welfare of his constituents and all the people of wisconsin but noooooo he feels the need to show us again that politics is more important than people. boo hiss on him.
The Sheriff of Fitzgerald’s home county (Dodge) has already posted on Facebook that he will not be enforcing this and to not call his office if people are not complying.
The Wisconsin Legislature adjourned on May 13, if I’m not mistaken. Since then — for two and a half months — they have done nothing except issue anti-Evers press releases, make re-election videos, raise money, and social distance with lobbyists. Provide some sort of leadership in the middle of a health and economic crisis? No time for that stuff. But now that Evers did something, Vos and Fitzgerald spring into “action.”
