Judge refuses to dismiss lawsuit against WMC and RSLC
Karofsky holds special interests accountable for false information
MILWAUKEE — Earlier today a Milwaukee County Circuit Court did not grant motions by Dan Kelly’s right-wing allies to dismiss the Karofsky campaign’s lawsuit, advancing the case to hold these groups accountable for blatantly false statements made against Judge Karofsky.
“Dan Kelly has relied on his right-wing allies to spread allegations against Judge Jill Karofsky they know are baseless and false. Today’s hearing shows that our arguments have merit and that it’s important for these organizations to be held accountable for their actions,” said Karofsky Campaign Manager Tyler Hendricks. “We need transparency, accountability, and independence on the court, and Jill Karofsky puts these values first. In contrast, Dan Kelly is seemingly happy to hide behind special interest lies.”
Last week the Karofsky campaign filed suit against the organizations after they continued to spread false information related to two cases:
- State of Wisconsin v. Worley: Both WMC and RSLC cite this 1999 case despite evidence showing Karofsky was not involved until more than a year after the plea agreement was made and the defendant was sentenced. PolitiFact wrote, “The ad is based on sloppy research that misunderstood the meaning of the online case records. We rate this claim Pants on Fire.” WMC and RSLC have taken these ads down and removed online links to them, essentially admitting they were false.
- State of Wisconsin v. Thompson: In their latest ad, RSLC cites this 2016 case and says Karofsky was responsible for “allowing a deal that puts him back on the street.” In reality, current records show the defendant is in prison and not “back on the street.”
Both parties will work with the court to set a future hearing date to continue this case.
