Sen. Fitzgerald Reacts to Gov. Evers Special Session Announcement
"Liberals across the country are upping their rhetoric in support of taking guns from law-abiding citizens."
[Madison, WI] — Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald released the following statement today regarding the special session announcement from Governor Evers:
“Liberals across the country are upping their rhetoric in support of taking guns from law-abiding citizens. After the governor opened the door to a long-term plan of gun confiscation at his press conference last month, it’s easy to see how today’s action could just be the first attack on the Second Amendment. The Senate will not be part of a drawn-out strategy to infringe on constitutional rights.”
Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald (R-Juneau) represents the 13th Senate District, which covers portions of Dodge, Jefferson, Waukesha, Washington, Dane, and Columbia counties.

If conservatives such as Fitzgerald were truly concerned about 2nd amendment rights, they would protect those rights for ALL citizens. As it stands, the concern is only for the rights of Euro-Americans. Fitzgerald seems to be totally unconcerned that guns from WOW counties are finding their way to the streets of inner city Milwaukee. He seems to be to totally unconcerned about how guns purchased through gun shows, on the internet or through private sales are being used in mass shootings; shootings that are killing our children.
Be honest Fitzgerald. Your concern is not really about protecting constitutional rights. It has more to do with continuing to sow racial fear. It is about redirecting the anger and frustration over a government that cares little for the needs of working people towards communities of color. The history of the 2nd amendment has never been about self-protection. It was established as a means of arming white European settlers against Native Americans and African slaves. It has been used to justify ethnic cleansing and genocide in this country.
Fitzgerald, it is time to stop hiding behind the 2nd amendment and start bringing this country’s ideals (life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness) to all citizens and not just those who line your pockets with campaign donations.
I get so tired of this typical Republican approach and the attempt to skew the conversation to ignore what is desired into this “take weapons” away from “law-abiding citizens” typical verbiage. Please listen to your people across the state.
