MADISON – Governor Scott Walker today appointed Attorney William V. Gruber to serve as a judge on the Jefferson County Circuit Court, replacing retiring Judge Jennifer L. Weston.

“I am pleased to appoint William Gruber to the Jefferson County Circuit Court,” said Governor Walker. “His public-sector experience, community involvement, and judicial philosophy give me confidence that he will make an excellent judge.”

For the past five and a half years, Gruber has served as Watertown City Attorney, representing the city’s elected and appointed officials while also managing the legal affairs of the city. Prior to being appointed City Attorney, Gruber worked in Dodge County as Assistant Corporation Counsel where he was responsible for compliance with public records and open meetings laws, representing the State in Chapter 51 mental health and alcohol commitment proceedings, and representing the county in Chapter 54/55 guardianship and protective placement petitions. Before his work in the public sector, Gruber worked in private practice gaining widespread experience in civil, contract, property, and family law.

Gruber volunteers his time serving his community as a member on the board of directors for People Against Domestic Abuse of Jefferson County. He has been a board member and volunteer attorney for the Women’s Center of Waukesha – Crisis Prevention for the past three years and has also volunteered for the Wisconsin State Bar’s Wills for Heroes program. He is a member of the St. Thomas More Lawyer Society of Wisconsin and the Federalist Society.

“Attorney Gruber’s experience in private practice and as a municipal attorney give him a background in many areas of the law which will provide a good foundation to serve as Circuit Court Judge,” Dodge County Circuit Court Judge Joseph Sciascia wrote in support of Gruber. “Furthermore, I believe he has the patience, temperament and strong moral character which are required of a judge.”

Watertown Chief of Police Timothy Roets highly recommends Gruber stating, “Mr. Gruber is exceptionally qualified and has the temperament necessary for this honorable position. He has superb judgement, knows the law, and his measured demeanor is particularly well-suited for the high-volume Jefferson County Circuit Court. Moreover, his legal knowledge and ethical behavior has earned him the respect of our entire police department.”

Gruber received his juris doctor degree from Marquette University Law School and his undergraduate degree from Carroll University.
