Fall Floral Show, Where the Coleuses Grow, to Open at The Domes Sept. 22

MILWAUKEE – More than 30 varieties of coleus, of different colors, patterns, shapes, and sizes, will camouflage whimsical sculptures of forest animals during the fall floral show, Where the Coleuses Grow. The show opens Sept. 22 at The Domes, 524 S. Layton Blvd.
Foliage in combinations of greens, yellows, pinks, and reds will help to hide similarly colored rabbits, squirrels, and other impish critters. Grasses and vines as well as chrysanthemums will complement this seasonal show. Hours are Monday–Friday, from 9 a.m.–5 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays from 9 a.m.–4 p.m. The show runs through Nov. 4.
Admission fees range from $5 to $8. When presenting IDs for proof of status, Milwaukee County residents, students of all ages, and people with disabilities receive discounted admission. Children age 5 and under are admitted free. In addition, Milwaukee County Residents with proof of residency receive free admission on Mondays, from 9 a.m.–noon, excluding the celebration of major holidays. No food or beverage carry-ins. Special events planned during the show’s run are Dia de los Muertos, Plant Power: An Evening with Essential Oils, and the Milwaukee Winter Farmers Market.
Dia de los Muertos
Oct. 26, from 6–9 p.m., the Desert Dome will be filled with candlelight, orange marigolds, and cheerful, brightly colored decorations to celebrate Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead.
Traditional ofrendas, or altars, will be located throughout The Domes, and the Show Dome will feature the music of Mariachi Zamora and dancing.
Local Mexican restaurants will be on-site to sell food and beverages.

Plant Power: An Evening with Essential Oils
Nov. 1, from 6–9 p.m., the restorative power of plants of the Mitchell Park Domes will be explored at this new event focused on the world of essential oils.
Guests will receive a passport and will travel to stations throughout the conservatory’s global collections. Topics at the stations include plant sourcing, extraction methods, and modes of use. Horticulturists, educators, and wellness advocates from dōTERRA, a producer of therapeutic-grade essential oils, will discuss the most popular essential oils and offer guidance in using the oils appropriately. Guided tours, live music, and a vendor area round out the event.
Also included in admission will be a goody bag with an essential-oil rollerball, a rosemary plant grown in The Domes Greenhouses, an essential-oil-infused beverage, and a chance to win a door prize.
Hors d’oeuvres, featuring Mediterranean herbs, and cocktails will be available for purchase from Zilli Hospitality Group.

Winter Farmers Market
Nov. 3–March 30, the Milwaukee Winter Farmers Market will continue in the Annex on Saturdays, with new hours, from 8 a.m.–noon.
The Fondy Food Center manages the market and connects neighbors to fresh, local food by bringing together about 50 weekly vendors. The Veggie Valet, a coat check for purchases, will be offered to market-goers so they can visit The Domes more easily.
Admission to the market and parking are free. Regular admission applies to enter The Domes. No market will be held Nov. 24 and Dec. 29. For details, visit mcwfm.org.
