Open house set for new, merged 81st Street School with individualized learning focus, pre-engineering focus and regular education K3
Will be held Tuesday, Feb. 12 from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.
MILWAUKEE (February 7, 2013) – The new, merged 81st Street School – which offers a personalized learning focus, a pre-engineering focus and regular education K3 – will hold an open house Tuesday for prospective parents and neighbors.
The open house is set for 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, February 12 at the school, 2964 N. 81st Street, Milwaukee 53222. 81st Street School is located in Cooper Park neighborhood on the city’s west side, immediately west of the Enderis Park neighborhood and south of the Kops Park neighborhood.
Families and neighbors are welcome to come at any time during the open house, which will give them the opportunity to meet teachers, tour the building and get detailed information about the school’s new focus.
The new, merged neighborhood school is the result of a two-year process that brought together parents, neighbors, staff and school administrators from the popular 68th Street early childhood program and 81st Street School.
“We’re excited to show our prospective parents and neighbors the excellent programs we offer!” Principal Elisabeth Words said.
81st Street School offers a safe, nurturing school environment that encourages students to find the best in themselves and others. The school also offers an after-school program from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and encourages parents to volunteer at the school 10 hours each year.
The new personalized learning and pre-engineering focus will begin for the upcoming 2013-14 school year. In 2014-15, the school will add a world languages focus and begin phasing out middle school grades. Students entering 6th grade will be encouraged to continue their education at the strong 6th-through-12th-grade programs at Milwaukee School of Languages or Morse•Marshall School for the Gifted and Talented. Citywide arts middle schools would also be a strong option.
Milwaukee Public Schools is Wisconsin’s largest school district, serving more than 78,000 students in more than 160 schools across the city. U.S. News and World Report named MPS’ Rufus King International School and Ronald Wilson Reagan College Preparatory High School the two best high schools in the state and among the 200 best in the country in 2012. In the past year, Milwaukee Public Schools posted a growing graduation rate 17 points higher than the rate for 2000.
