Outdoor painting competition begins this weekend
The events benefit the museums of the Milwaukee Museum Mile.
In celebration of the Milwaukee Museum Mile effort’s fifth anniversary, up to 75 Midwestern artists will compete throughout the historic East Side in “Art in the City: Plein Air MKE,” a five day open-air painting contest that begins Saturday, May 7.
Alderman Nik Kovac, a member of the Milwaukee Arts Board, said that artists will be working throughout a corridor from Prospect and Juneau Avenues north to Lake Park. The competition will culminate with judging and an awards ceremony the evening of Thursday, May 12, when artists and patrons will gather for the “City Soiree” at Saint John’s on the Lake. Judges will select the winners of $5,000 in prize money, and the art created during the competition will be offered for sale through Saturday, May 14.
“While it’s already home to some of the greatest artistic institutions in the city, the East Side itself will become art during this unique event,” Alderman Kovac said. “I’m excited to see how our historic architecture, inspired parkland and sweeping views of Lake Michigan are interpreted by the various artists during Plein Air MKE.”
On Saturday, May 7, artists will have the opportunity to win additional prizes in a timed quick-paint competition. Between 9:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., artists will have two-and-a-half hours to paint a scene along the East Side’s famed Brady Street.
The events benefit the museums of the Milwaukee Museum Mile, a cooperative effort celebrating its fifth anniversary on Sunday, May 15. That day, member museums will be open to the public from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., offering free or reduced admissions.
