Teaching Safe Bicycling Couse
The day-long classes will guide future trainers how to understand a child’s approach to cycling, to identify and avoid crash hazards and to use the safest routes possible
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation will offer five training classes around the state this spring to teach adults the basics of providing safe bicycling instruction to children.
The day-long classes (from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.) will guide future trainers how to understand a child’s approach to cycling, to identify and avoid crash hazards and to use the safest routes possible. A hands-on demonstration will require participants to bring a bicycle, helmet and comfortable riding clothes.
Participants also will learn the best practices for developing bicycle safety training programs in their communities.
Through the Bureau of Transportation Safety, WisDOT has worked to reduce the number of crashes that harm people on bicycles each year. Learning to teach children proper rules of the road and safety practices has been a key part of that effort for a quarter-century.
Registration is free and required. Opportunities to join the “teach the teacher” classes extend from April through May. For further information and registration forms, contact Larry Corsi, 608-709-0081 or larry.corsi@dot.wi.gov.
