North Division wins one of 20 spots nationwide in mobile app development program
Announcement set as North joins Lenovo Scholar Network; MPS now home to 2 schools in program connecting students with the resources of Lenovo, NAF and MIT
MILWAUKEE (October 6, 2015) – Milwaukee Public Schools‘ North Division High School is one of just 20 schools nationwide this year that have earned the right to join a national network training the next generation of mobile phone application developers.
The school is now part of the Lenovo Scholar Network, a program created in partnership with tech company Lenovo, NAF and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s (MIT’s) MediaLab that is designed to enable the next generation of developers and entrepreneurs. The North Division High School Academy of Information Technology is a member of NAF, a national network of education, business and community leaders who work together to ensure high school students are college, career, and future ready.
District, school and network officials will come together Wednesday, October 7 at 9 a.m. to celebrate the recognition at North Division High School, 1011 W. Center Street, Milwaukee 53206.
Through the network, Lenovo provides students with ThinkPad laptops and YOGA tablets to help students code, test and develop their mobile apps. It also helps teachers and mentors implement the curriculum that comes with the programs. Students at North also have access to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Media Lab’s App Inventor development tool to build and test apps.
With the addition of North, MPS is now home to two of the 30 participating schools nationwide. MPS’ Washington High School of Information Technology joined the network in 2014. A bowling app created by Washington students was one of five national winners in the first Lenovo Scholar Network National Competition and went on to be named national fan favorite.
Both North and Washington are home to NAF academies in Information Technology, offering students industry-specific classes related to the growing field of IT. Students participate in work-based learning activities to put their lessons into action.
