Citizen victimized twice – first by bad guys, and then by the city
Statement from Alderman Bob Donovan July 10, 2015
I am calling on the mayor and the administration to refund the tow lot payment of a woman who was carjacked in broad daylight outside her home. The thieves trashed the inside of her car and then dumped it, and it ended up in the city tow lot.
Why would the city make an already bad situation worse? The victim is a nurse who says she is a visiting resident (a “guest,” if you will). In my mind, a quick refund for her is simply the right thing to do. In fact, I’m considering drafting Council legislation to allow our tow lot to waive fees in cases just like this one.
Also, one might consider the victim’s comments to Fox Six News:
- “Two guys came up and said ‘give me your keys.’ I said ‘no’ and then they immediately like, grabbed at the keys and started fighting with me for the keys. Probably the most emotional thing I’ve ever been through.”
- “It’s really frustrating because I’ve lived in places that I thought were a lot more dangerous than Milwaukee — and now I don’t feel safe at all.”
- “We went (to the city tow lot) to go get it as that’s our only car and we both needed to go to work and whenever we got there we were told that we had to pay $205 to get the car out of the impound.”
And now – not surprisingly – the victim is indicating that she can’t wait to move out of Milwaukee. Not exactly the kind of message we want carried forward by former residents and guests!
