Betty Brinn Children’s Museum offers special evening hours on June 23 to showcase work created by students in STEM-based field trip program

MILWAUKEE – The Betty Brinn Children’s Museum will stay open until 7 p.m. on June 23 so that visitors can see and interact with work created by third and fourth grade students from four Milwaukee charter schools that participated in a special Museum field trip program focused on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).
Students from Bruce Guadalupe Community School, Capitol West Academy, Milwaukee Scholars Charter School, and Windlake Elementary worked with educators in the Museum’s Be a Maker space and in the classroom during a five-week program themed around circuits. Be A Maker, which opened in June 2014, is a communal workshop where young children can use tools, materials, digital resources and technologies to work on a wide variety of do-it-yourself projects. The students worked to create electrical circuits, and then used software to apply what they learned to create loops of sounds that were integrated to become musical compositions.
From 5-7 p.m. on June 23, project participants, their families and Museum visitors can interact with a DJ who will play the students’ recorded sound samples, experiment with the synthesizers and instruments used to make the musical pieces, and view album-inspired artwork created by the students. Student work will also be displayed at the Museum on June 24 and 25 from 3:30-5 p.m.
“Engaging children at a young age in activities that promote STEM education is a national priority, and the Museum’s Be A Maker space provides a remarkable setting where children can use technology and real tools to explore do-it-yourself projects that help them learn new skills, collaborate and share their accomplishments,” said Fern Shupeck, executive director.
The Museum is located at 929 E. Wisconsin Ave. in Milwaukee. Admission is $8 per person and $7 per senior (adults older than 55); children younger than 1 are free. Free admission and membership is available for those who qualify based on need. More information is available at www.bbcmkids.org or by calling 414-390-KIDS (5437).
