“Ludwig II”

Bold statement: the best part about the MKE Film Fest is their “Passport” category. Seriously, it’s crazy to think how many great movies there are, just out there on planet Earth, remaining unwatched.

This year, MFF13 presents Passport: Germany, with Ludwig II as one of its more epic screenings. With breathtaking artistry and an enthralling history, Ludwig II calls to mind the great moments of Amadeus, Marie Antoinette and The King’s Speech. Warning: you’ll feel lots of excellent feelings.

After his father’s death, Ludwig II rises to the Bavarian throne at age 18. Almost immediately, he begins to unravel. Watch for an incredible scene involving the coronation mantle, as Sabin Tambrea performs with a crushing intensity I can only compare to Paul Dano’s performance in There Will Be Blood. Similar moments arise throughout the film, as Ludwig II experiences fever dreams, nightmares, and overcoming anxiety as the Franco-Prussian war closes in on his dreams for an artistic, weapon-free, peaceful country.

Ludwig II is presented in German with English subtitles, screening at the Fox Bay Cinema at 7 p.m., Friday September 27 (rush tickets only), at noon at the Oriental Theatre on Wednesday October 2, and at noon at the Downer Theatre on Sunday October 6.
