Pizza Man Gone and Apartments Arise
Construction of the mixed use building with 39 apartments is proceeding at North and Oakland.
Like the dough in an oven, the old Pizza Man site is rising (cheesy, I know, but hey, it’s Friday). While the old East Side pizza parlor won’t return to its former home, having now settled on Downer Ave., its former location, the prominent corner of E. North Ave. and N. Oakland Ave. will again be the locale for a mixed-use building. Robert Joseph‘s aptly-named Joseph Property Development, which is close to completion of a mixed-use overhaul of the Prospect Mall just southeast of this site, is also building a 39-unit apartment building on the site that was ravaged by a fire January of 2010. In addition to the apartments, the project will include 6,000 square-feet of commercial space.
Unlike the prior mixed-use building on the site, this building will feature 36 parking stalls. To enable a pedestrian-friendly first floor along E. North Ave and to leverage the hill the site sits on, two homes were torn down north of the former Pizza Man building. For more on the changes coming to E. North Ave., see my January article “North Avenue Boomtown.” Learn more about this project on our 1800 E. North Ave. building page.
