Integrating Urban Planning Into Municipal Water Quality Monitoring Programs

The Department of Urban Planning, in collaboration with the School of Public Health, is pleased to announce the next lecture for its Fall 2009 Smart Growth Seminar Series.  Dr. Julie Kinzelman, Director of Racine’s Health Department Laboratory, will make a presentation, entitled “Integrating Urban Planning Into Municipal Water Quality Monitoring Programs.”  She will discuss the public health, social, and economic threats from bacterial contamination of rivers, inland lakes, and coastal waters.  Participants will learn about proposed changes to the Clean Water Act, currently available rapid test methods for fecal indicator organisms, and steps necessary to identify impacts of land use/pollution sources on flowing/coastal waters and public health.
