WMSE Announces Exciting Lineup of Events, Including Backyard BBQ Headlined by Guided by Voices

Milwaukee, WI – August 13, 2024 – WMSE 91.7FM, Milwaukee’s only free-form, community-supported radio station, is excited to announce a series of events to thank its listeners and celebrate Milwaukee’s vibrant music-loving community.

August 24: Backyard BBQ with Guided by Voices

The highlight of the summer will be the 14th Annual Backyard BBQ, headlined by indie rock legends Guided by Voices, on August 24 at Humboldt Park in Bay View. Since 2010, WMSE has hosted this free music festival to show its listeners, supporters, and community appreciation. Presented by Lakefront Brewery and Gruber Law Offices, this year’s musical lineup includes:

“Guided by Voices is a seminal progressive post-punk band whose influence on the modern independent music scene is unparalleled,” said Station Manager Tom Crawford. “Their music embodies the spirit of Frontier Radio, and it’s our privilege to welcome the band to the city of Milwaukee and share them with our loyal listeners and beloved community.”

Beyond live music, the Backyard BBQ offers a full day of summer fun for the whole family with food trucks, activities, and cold local craft beer. “We are thrilled that Guided by Voices will share their music with our community, but we’re equally pumped about the exceptional local talent that will share the stage,” said Music Director Sid McCain. “Wear tight socks because we’ll knock them off on August 24.”

September 10: Local/Live with Graham Hunt

WMSE is also excited to announce the return of Local/Live at Anodyne Coffee on September 10, featuring singer-songwriter Graham Hunt of the Midnight Reruns. This intimate live session will provide a unique opportunity for all ages to experience Milwaukee’s local talent up close and personally.

September 17: WMSE Day Party

September 17, or 9/17, is WMSE 91.7FM Day. The station will thank its fans and friends with a listening party at The Wiggle Room in Bay View. WMSE DJs will be on-site spinning records starting at 2 p.m. The party starts officially at 7 p.m. featuring Sid from Squid Inc., Von Munz from the Von Munz Vinyl Variety show, and many more.

September 20: Friday Night Freak Show at the Oriental Theatre

On September 20, the Friday Night Freak Show returns with a new home at the Oriental Theatre. To celebrate, the kickoff film for the season will be Quentin Tarantino‘s “Reservoir Dogs.” The fun starts at 6:30 pm. with a DJ set by Johnny Z from the Chicken Shack program, followed by the film screening at 7:30 p.m.
