Wisconsinites Put Pressure on Republicans to Stop Playing Politics

MADISON – Today, the Wisconsin State Assembly intended to be in session to take up Senate Joint Resolution 3 (SJR 3) which would terminate the COVID-19 public health emergency and repeal Governor Tony Evers’ mask mandate. After stalling for over four hours, the Republican majority decided not to vote on the bill today.

“Masks save lives. It’s as simple as that,” said Representative Dianne Hesselbein (D-Middleton). “It doesn’t have to be political. It doesn’t have to be difficult. And it doesn’t have to be forever. We just have to work together and wear a mask to protect the people we love.”

Wisconsinites from across the state spoke up with a similar sentiment against the Republican power display to remove the state’s mask order, and as a result, Speaker Vos did not bring SJR 3 to the floor.

“Wisconsinites were calling their legislators and telling them not to repeal the mask mandate,” Hesselbein said as constituents continued to contact her office asking her to vote against SJR 3. “People got on the phone, sent emails, posted on social media, and spoke up. I want to encourage people to keep up the pressure because the people made their voices heard today and it worked!”
