Wellpoint Care Network kicks off multi-year project to transform its historic 18-acre campus

Statement of Alderman Lamont Westmoreland May 21, 2024

Today I was honored to take part in the groundbreaking for the Wellpoint Care Network’s Green Stormwater Infrastructure (GSI) project at its beautiful campus at 8901 W. Capitol Dr. in the 5th Aldermanic District. The GSI is just the start, as Wellpoint Care is committed to its future in the neighborhood and is investing in a multi-year project to transform its historic 18-acre campus into a vibrant neighborhood anchor.

The GSI project is a collaborative effort between Wellpoint Care Network and the Fresh Coast Protection Partnership – a community-based partnership between Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD) and Corvias Infrastructure Solutions. The project is designed to capture at least one million gallons of stormwater each year and includes constructed wetlands, bioswales, and native landscaping. It will also include the use of multiple bioretention practices sized to intercept and detain runoff from all existing building roofs and parking areas. It will also include the creation of a series of bioretention basins located along the property to intercept and treat stormwater runoff.

Once completed, the GSI project will significantly reduce the possibility of the campus contributing to neighborhood flooding.

It is also exciting to know that in the near future, Wellpoint Care Network will begin work to make major improvements to the existing building, including a state-of-the-art mental health clinic, a community social hall, a trauma-informed care training center, and a redevelopment of the grounds surrounding the building. The redevelopment of the grounds will have community-accessible health and wellness supports like walking paths, a peace garden, and community gardens where children and adults can learn to grow healthy foods and connect with nature and the community.

I want to say THANK YOU to the Wellpoint Care Network leadership for their vision to make such neighborhood-enhancing improvements to the campus, and for continuing to be a place for neighbors and community members to connect, collaborate and care for themselves and for one another.
