WEC Orders Recall Election for Trempealeau County District Attorney

By - Aug 22nd, 2018 03:46 pm

MADISON, WI – The Wisconsin Elections Commission today voted unanimously to order a recall election for Trempealeau County District Attorney in response to a recall petition.

The Commission ordered the recall election to be held on October 2, 2018.  If more than one candidate from a political party runs, a recall partisan primary for that party will be held October 2 and the recall election will be held on November 6, 2018, concurrent with the 2018 General Election.

The Commission received a recall petition from the Recall Taavi McMahon Committee on July 23, 2018. Commission staff determined that it contained 3,149 valid signatures, which is 466 more signatures than the required minimum number of 2,683 valid signatures. Mr. McMahon did not file a challenge to the petition.

The right to recall elected officials is enshrined in the Wisconsin Constitution. When an official is recalled, he or she is recalled to face the voters again in a new election. The winner of the recall election fills out the remainder of the term, which runs through 2020.

Incumbent District Attorney Taavi McMahon’s name will automatically appear on the ballot unless he resigns within 10 days of today’s order.  Candidates seeking to run against the incumbent must file nomination papers by 5 p.m. Tuesday, September 4, 2018.

More information about the recall is available on the Commission’s website: https://elections.wi.gov/elections-voting/recall/2018/trempealeau-county-da
