By - Jan 24th, 2026 06:06 pm

The following statement was released by the Wisconsin Education Association Council after the killing of a Preble High School (Green Bay) graduate by ICE in Minnesota. The statement can be attributed to WEAC President Peggy Wirtz-Olsen, a Wisconsin teacher and president of the Wisconsin Education Association Council.

“Our hearts are broken by the tragic shooting in Minneapolis of a Green Bay Preble High School graduate at the hands of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Every student who learns and grows in Wisconsin public schools is forever a part of our community.

“Educators across Wisconsin stand with Alex Pretti’s family, former classmates and the Green Bay and Minneapolis communities in grief. We lift our call with educators across America for truth, accountability and justice. The long-lasting damage caused by ICE violence will reverberate in Minnesota, Wisconsin and across America for years to come.

“Alex served others selflessly and cared deeply about standing against wrongs in his community. Our Wisconsin Public School community will honor Alex and all those harmed by ICE by standing stronger and raising our voices louder to ensure every student regardless of race, background or immigration status is safe, valued and supported in their schools and communities.”
