WBB Hosts St. John’s Wednesday Night
First and only meeting of the regular season between the two teams
The Marquette University women’s basketball team hosts St. John’s on Wednesday, Feb. 5 at 6:30 p.m. CT. The BIG EAST Digital Network on FloCollege features the broadcast with Bob Brainerd (play-by-play) and Chloe Marotta (analyst) on the call.
SCOUTING THE RED STORM
• St. John’s is coming off a 55-44 win against Xavier on Sunday.
• The Red Storm were picked to finish fourth in the BIG EAST preseason coaches poll.
ALL-TIME SERIES AGAINST ST. JOHN’S
• Marquette and St. John’s are meeting for the 36th time on Wednesday night.
• St. John’s leads the all-time series, 22-13
• Wednesday night is the only regular season meeting between the two teams this season.
BIG EAST HONORS THE BLACK FIVES
• For the fourth consecutive season, the BIG EAST Conference will partner with the Black Fives Foundation, a nonprofit public charity dedicated to inspiring excellence in youth by preserving, teaching, and honoring the pre-NBA history of African Americans in basketball.
• This year’s theme, “Pioneers of Change,” will shine a spotlight on the early African American trailblazers who revolutionized the game and left an indelible mark on the sport.
• BIG EAST players will wear shooting shirts emblazoned with the phrase “Pioneers of Change” alongside the team logos of historical Black Fives basketball teams. From the early 1900s through the 1940s, these teams played in ballrooms and gymnasiums located within the same geographic footprint as many of the BIG EAST schools today.
• Marquette will be representing the Mysterious Girls and St. John’s the Younger Set Club.
VICE EARNS SECOND WEEKLY HONOR ROLL SELECTION
• Halle Vice earned a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Monday.
• Vice averaged 16.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, 3.0 steals and 2.0 assists last week for MU.
• The Bettendorf, Iowa native had a game-high 20 points and eight rebounds against Villanova on Sunday while shooting 90 percent form the floor for her best shooting clip of her career. Vice had 13 points, six rebounds and a career-high four steals at Xavier last Wednesday.
• Vice shot 66.7 percent (14-of-21) from the floor for the week.
DEFENSE LEADS THE WAY FOR MU
• Marquette is second in the BIG EAST and 17th in the nation in field goal percentage defense (36.0 percent) and have held opponents to under 45 percent from the floor in 20-of-21 games this season.
• The loss at Creighton on Wednesday, Jan. 8 was the first time this season an opponent shot 45-percent-or-better against Marquette.
• MU is 37th nationally holding opponents to 56.6 points per game.
• The Golden Eagles have held opponents to under 53 points six times and have held teams to 10-points-or-less in 20 quarters this season.
