Wall Street Journal, LinkedIn: Milwaukee Region Booming with Opportunities for Young Professionals

Publications laud southeastern Wisconsin as a haven for hiring, growth

July 21, 2025 (MILWAUKEE) – Milwaukee is growing its reputation as a premier destination for young professionals, as recognized by two major media outlets in recent days.

In a feature published by the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), Milwaukee was spotlighted as one of the top U.S. cities for recent college graduates. The article cites the city’s affordability, vibrant job market and the expansion of major employers like Northwestern Mutual, Milwaukee Tool and Eli Lilly – all of whom have expanded their footprint here in recent years.

The WSJ notes that Milwaukee has seen a significant increase in hiring for young professionals, with the city’s cost of living offering a compelling alternative to larger metros like Chicago.

Adding to this recognition, LinkedIn’s “Cities on the Rise 2025” report placed Milwaukee at No. 5 among the fastest-growing U.S. metros for jobs and career growth.

The report, based on LinkedIn’s hiring and migration data, highlights Milwaukee’s strong performance in attracting and retaining talent, particularly among early-career professionals. The city’s growth is attributed to a combination of job availability, competitive wages and a high quality of life.

“These national spotlights validate what we’ve long known: Milwaukee is a city of opportunity,” said Dale Kooyenga, President of the Metropolitan Milwaukee Association of Commerce. “We’re seeing a surge in companies investing in our region and a new generation of talent choosing to build their careers here. It’s a powerful combination that’s helping to fuel our economic growth.”

MMAC and the M7 Regional Partnership continue to work with the business community, elected officials and other stakeholders to support talent attraction and retention efforts, ensuring Milwaukee remains a top choice for the next generation of leaders.

When my two sons graduated from college in the early 2000’s, they had to move out of State to find jobs that were commensurate with their training. Most of their friends also had the same problem. Chicago and the Minneapolis-St. Paul area were the usual destinations for many Wisconsin graduates. No one that my sons knew have moved back to the Milwaukee area while they both work in their fields in Chicago. This is a great change for the Milwaukee area with the WSJ writing about Milwaukee as a destination for skilled graduates looking for work.
