The 23rd Annual Mayor’s Design Awards Goes Virtual in 2020
Honors for Great Additions to Milwaukee’s Built Environment Will Be Revealed Next Week in a Multi-Day Online Celebration
Starting October 5th the 2020 Mayor’s Design Award winners will be formally unveiled with a weeklong celebration of the top additions to Milwaukee’s built environment. Now in its 23rd year, the Mayor’s Design Awards is the city’s top honor for new buildings, places, and design additions in neighborhoods throughout Milwaukee.
The award ceremony typically takes place at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s School of Architecture & Urban Planning, a gathering that is impossible in this pandemic year. Instead, each day next week a new set of honorees will be highlighted on the Department of City Development Facebook page at facebook.com/milwaukeedcd.
“Design matters in cities because it is all around us. It shapes the streets and public spaces we enjoy, the neighborhoods where we live, and the ways we interact with each other,” Mayor Tom Barrett said. “Our streets and urban spaces, and the built environment that shapes them, belong to everyone. These award winning projects demonstrate respect for all Milwaukee residents.”
The virtual awards rollout will name multiple award winners in each of five categories: Art + Space, Play Green, Old + New, Local Gems, and Raise the Bar. Each day during the Mayors Design Awards Week, a category will be featured. On Friday, October 9th a full list of all award winners will be posted at milwaukee.gov/MayorsDesignAwards.
This year’s Mayor’s Design Awards includes a Design Champion Award posthumously honoring Whitney Gould. Gould, a critic and advocate for great design, worked for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel for more than two decades. After retiring as a journalist, Gould served on the City Plan Commission and participated regularly in city Design Review Team meetings. Her insight and influence improved projects across Milwaukee.
