MILWAUKEE – On August 19, 2023, a shooting occurred at a downtown Milwaukee bus stop near 6th and Wisconsin. On August 24, 2023 a passenger was shot on board a MCTS bus near Capitol Drive and Sherman Boulevard. Supervisors Peter Burgelis and Priscilla E. Coggs-Jones issued the following statements:

“The safety of our passengers and operators (bus drivers) is priority number one – always. These recent unfortunate incidents underscore the urgent need for enhanced security for MCTS,” stated Supervisor Burgelis. “I commend our operators’ professionalism during these unfortunate incidents. I urge my colleagues to join me in calling for the administration to adopt the Transit Safety and Security Task Force recommendations. The County must take responsibility for Transit safety and security and fire its’ third-party vendor. Well-trained County employees are the best solution to professionally protect and serve. We must act now for safer transit in Milwaukee County.”

“Our transit system is the heartbeat of our city, connecting residents to opportunities and experiences. We cannot afford to be passive and turn a blind eye to such violence. A safe and secure transit system is paramount for the protection of our riders and operators,” said Supervisor Coggs-Jones “These recent incidents are reminders that senseless acts of gun violence can victimize innocent bystanders. As we move forward, it’s our goal to champion a comprehensive approach, identify solutions, and ensure that our transportation network is viable, safe, and efficient option for everyone who calls Milwaukee home.”

The 2023 Transit Safety and Security Task Force has forwarded six recommendations to the County Board of Supervisors in resolution 23-839, which could be heard by the Committee on Transportation and Transit as early as September 5th.

Supervisor Coggs-Jones serves as Chair of the Committee on Transportation and Transit, and as a Commissioner on the Southeastern Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission.

Supervisor Burgelis serves as Co-Chair of the Milwaukee County Transit Safety and Security Task Force and as a board director for Milwaukee Transport Services, which operates MCTS.
