MILWAUKEE – The Board of Supervisors passed (17-1) a resolution today that proposed creative, new sources of funding for County parks. In a statement, Supervisor Goodwin congratulated Supervisor Weishan, the resolution’s sponsor, for his innovative approach to securing a healthy future for County parks:

“I extend my congratulations to Supervisor Weishan for thoughtfully proposing how we can fund improvements to our parks. In times like these, we need to consider any ways to keep our parks system strong. That is why I am so pleased to be a co-sponsor to Supervisor Weishan’s resolution,” said Goodwin.

The resolution suggests alternative ways to fund County parks by allowing the Parks Department to create a raffle and to pursue a special State of Wisconsin license plate. In the case of the license plate, a portion of each license plate fee for each plate sold would be returned to the Parks.

“I am especially excited about creating a special Milwaukee County Parks license plate. I myself thought the parks should take advantage of this opportunity and even designed an example plate that I plan to share with the Parks Department. A license plate will not only help fund the parks, but it is a great way for County residents to show the pride they have in our parks system,” said Goodwin.

Goodwin’s design includes the Milwaukee County Parks logo:

The license plate initiative will require community support since the Department of Transportation requires 500 signatures from community members as part of the license plate application.

Maybe Milwaukee County should have a bake sale. The County Board needs to continue to make the case that adequate funding for our parks is a priority and should come from shared revenue. The State under the Republicans can find money for anything except funding the quality of life activities that are becoming more important with Covid-19.
