Supervisor Deanna Alexander Responds to Concerns Over Proposed ICE Facility in Northwest Milwaukee
MILWAUKEE – Milwaukee County Supervisor Deanna Alexander issued the following statement, responding to concerns regarding the potential placement of an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) processing facility within County District 18, citing conflicting information about the facility and creating sensible processes that benefit all:
“As a Supervisor and veteran with firsthand experience in border control, I understand the complexities of immigration and the challenges it poses for individuals and communities. While I’m not categorically opposed to the proposed ICE facility in District 18, it’s essential that ICE engages with local officials and presents a plan that aligns with our community’s values. Any facility must prioritize transparency, efficiency, and humane treatment. ICE should be very concerned that residents and some local officials thought a brand-new facility that could detain people for unconscionable amounts of time was being planned. I gathered facts about the situation before taking a position on the alleged plan and it seems that ICE is only pursuing potentially moving an already-existing office, that does not hold detainees on a long-term basis, and that city officials have had knowledge of this pending change for quite some time.
“I also call on the incoming Presidential administration and Congress to make swift, sensible, and compassionate improvements to overhaul our current immigration system at the federal level, including streamlined processes for legal entry, citizenship, and deportation when warranted. I do not envy those charged with developing policies that will consider the unique situations that many unauthorized immigrants and their families face, hoping that someday they will become a documented citizen to match the otherwise law-abiding and productive American lifestyles they lead. While crafting good policy can be difficult and complex, we can not ignore how desperately vastly improved processes and policies are needed.
“I remain committed to balancing compassion with the need for a secure and efficient immigration system and gathering the facts needed to make the best decisions possible.”
