Supervisor Burgelis Praises 2024 Budget’s Investments in Public Safety and Other Important Issues
MILWAUKEE – Today, Thursday, November 9, 2023, the Board of Supervisors adopted Milwaukee County’s 2024 Budget, which prioritizes public safety, transit security, parks improvements, and property tax relief, among other issues. The Board adopted a 2024 tax levy of $291,434,132 which is a $21,488,019 reduction from the 2023 budget. This represents a 6.87% reduction in tax levy. District 15 Supervisor Peter Burgelis gave the following statement on the budget’s adoption:
“I am thrilled that the County Board has come together to support increased funding for public safety priorities, including addressing correctional officer staffing shortages at the Milwaukee County Jail and $1.5 million in additional transit security funds. As Co-Chair of the MCTS Security Task Force, I fought hard for additional transit security. This is a strong first step forward toward better transit. Though not everything we wanted was included in this budget, I am happy to see progress and attention on these important issues. I will continue to advocate for additional transit security funding to protect our MCTS operators and riders.”
Supervisor Burgelis also authored and co-authored amendments to the 2024 Budget, 11 of which were approved by the full Board of Supervisors. These amendments include:
- $1.1 million in investments to Paratransit task force program recommendations.
- $358,599 to complete the construction of the Washington Park 40th Street Parking Lot.
- A supplemental appropriation of $200,000 to provide additional rent assistance funding.
- Implementing a top-priority effort in the Office of Government Affairs to advocate for a permanent source of transit funding.
- Establishing more stringent standards for Targeted Business Enterprise non-compliance.
- Creating a new policy establishing a 50/50 funding split between Milwaukee County and the Zoological Society for any new capital projects at the Milwaukee County Zoo.
The Adopted Budget now heads to County Executive David Crowley for final approval. Should the County Executive veto any portion of the budget, the Board of Supervisors will reconvene on Thursday, November 16 at 1:30 p.m. to address any vetoes.
