Stay vigilant and aware of your surroundings to help avoid carjackings
Statement from Alderman Lamont Westmoreland August 12, 2024
Over the past few days, there have been several troubling incidents in the 5th Aldermanic District involving violent hoodlums. In at least one incident, it was confirmed the perpetrators were teenagers, which aligns with recent concerns of youth involved crimes citywide.
These individuals have been targeting vehicles at or approaching intersections in attempted carjackings. Reports indicate that they rush cars from both sides while the vehicle is stopped or slowing down. In a particularly concerning instance, some of these individuals have pretended to be in distress, hoping someone will pull over to help, only to then rob or carjack the Good Samaritan. In at least one of these incidents, a citizen was shot at as they sped away to escape.I share this information not to incite fear or concern, but rather to urge everyone to stay vigilant and aware of their surroundings at all times. It is ridiculous that it has come to this, but whether you are in your car stopped, approaching a stop, or deciding whether to assist someone who appears to be in need, please exercise caution.
If you observe any suspicious activity, please report it to the Milwaukee Police Department via their non-emergency number at (414) 933-4444. For emergencies or situations requiring immediate attention, dial 9-1-1. When reporting, be sure to collect identifying information from the call taker and request a callback from the responding officer to stay informed about the outcome of your concern.
