Statement on this evening’s deadly shooting incident at former President Trump rally in PA

From Alderman Scott Spiker July 13, 2024

Political violence is abhorrent and should be rejected by all lovers of democracy and the peaceful transfer of power that lies at that political system’s core.

This remains true even if the object of that violence is someone you take to be a potential enemy of democracy and whom you fear will challenge or has already challenged the sanctity of our electoral process.

-If you are cheered by this moment, you are no lover of democracy.
-If you wish that an assassination attempt had been an actual assassination, you are no lover of democracy.
-If you do not rush to condemn this action and leave live the thought that you might condone it instead, you are no lover of democracy.

If you love the America we all do, you must reject in the clearest terms possible any attempt to thwart the democratic political process upon which it is built. That remains true whether or not the attempt is directed at someone you believe to be a threat to that process. It would be sheer hypocrisy to do otherwise.

Whether you do it in words or in thought alone, you cannot reject political violence on January 6 and embrace it on July 13.

I wish the former President a full and speedy recovery.
