New Berlin Mayor Dave Ament Should Do the Right Thing and Resign
Statement of Milwaukee Common Council Members: Alderman Alex Brower and Alderman Scott Spiker
On Tuesday night (August 25), the New Berlin Common Council approved a resolution addressing recent content shared through New Berlin Mayor Dave Ament’s personal social media account and reaffirming the City’s commitment to religious freedom, equal treatment, and nondiscriminatory City services.
Through the resolution, the New Berlin Council formally stated that the Mayor’s personal social media activity does not represent the official position of the City of New Berlin. The Council also condemned messages that promote stereotypes, hostility, discrimination, or cause people to feel unwelcome because of their religion, race, ethnicity, sex, or background. Further, the resolution states that City employees should not be expected to defend, explain, or accept responsibility for the Mayor’s personal conduct.
The resolution calls upon Mayor Ament to acknowledge the harm identified by the Council, accept responsibility for his actions, and offer an apology. The Council also stated that it will seek legal guidance as it considers additional actions available and appropriate under Wisconsin law.
Mayor Ament appeared at the New Berlin Council meeting Tuesday night, apologized publicly in a brief statement, but then quickly left the meeting space.
He did not resign.
We denounce the dehumanizing and Islamophobic content that Mayor Ament has publicly shared on Facebook, and we strongly urge him to resign immediately.
One of the posts shared by Ament states “America needs to shut down all Mosques and ban Islam,” while another contains offensive Islamophobic and anti-semitic content, stating “How to protect your house from terrorism” and shows a woman pointing to a piece of bacon hanging on a door handle.
Finally, a post shared by Mayor Ament states: “If you vote for a Muslim for elected office in this country, you are a traitor. You can’t convince me otherwise.”
We agree 100% with the Wisconsin Muslim Civic Alliance in finding these posts divisive and hurtful, and not what any elected leader should be sharing – not in a diverse Milwaukee suburb – not anywhere. This social media rhetoric coming from Mayor Ament is dangerous and can lead to a climate of further intolerance of Muslims, immigrants, and other marginalized communities.
It’s time for new leadership in New Berlin’s Mayor’s Office.
