We are pleased to say that two pieces of our ICE Out package, which take a clear stand against the appalling actions of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency (ICE), were passed Tuesday (March 3) in a strong show of support by the Common Council.
Through these resolutions, the City of Milwaukee officially states that it stands against mass deportation, calls for the abolition of ICE, and calls on Milwaukee Police Department officers to protect Milwaukee community members from infringement of their constitutional rights.ICE will soon finish construction of its new facility located at 11925 W. Lake Park Dr. in Milwaukee, and is expanding its legal operations in the City with “unusual and compelling urgency,” according to a recent article from Wired (see article here).
With ICE currently preparing to do more work in Milwaukee, it is important that the City and its residents also prepare.
The fact that the files passed unanimously amongst those present sends a strong message of support for those immigrants in Milwaukee who feel threatened by potential ICE action in these very unprecedented times, and it also shows our unity in the face of unjust and illegal threats to those we represent.
