Statement on #BiWeek
Alderwoman JoCasta Zamarripa September 25, 2020
I would be remiss to let this week conclude without recognizing Bisexual Awareness Week (September 16th-23rd). As the first and only openly LGBTQ+ member of the City of Milwaukee Common Council, I can tell you how paramount it is to have an out voice at the table.
I am proud to be a bi member of our LGBTQ+ community, but it took more than 3 decades before I felt safe enough to share this with my family, friends and constituents.
It is important to note that bisexual people make up the largest portion of the LGBTQ+ community, but are often erased and face higher risk than their peers for sexual assault and suicide. It is for these reasons that it is important to honor #BiWeek. May our bi family members, friends, and neighbors know that they are acknowledged, respected and, dare I say, loved – during #BiWeek and beyond.
