Open Kitchen (OK) debuts OK*mmmm (*milwaukee masa mole mill), an experimental traveling wet mill installation designed to process culturally significant ingredients and recipes in two acts. The first act mills Wisconsin-grown varieties of nixtamalized corn into fresh tortillas. The second act harvests locally grown ingredients from OK’s Riverwest garden, the Lynden’s Cultural Garden, the gardens of neighbors, and farmers markets, all of which will compose a mole sauce. Together, the two acts propose a framework for investigating and critiquing a range of conflicts in our local foodways. For this program, Rudy and Alyx will mill the corn and mole paste, make and cook tortillas, and talk about their food work. Chatting encouraged! Samples will be served at the end.

SUMMER 2022 DOG DAYS AT LYNDEN: MARGARET MUZA POPS UP AT THE LYNDEN SCULPTURE GARDEN TO MAKE TINTYPES
Saturday, September 17, 2022 – 10 am-4 pm
Fee: $150 per sitting. Each 30 minute session includes a tintype that the photographer takes and develops on site, as well as a scan.
More information and to register: https://www.lyndensculpturegarden.org/calendar/summer-2022-dog-days-sep-tintypes
Photographer Margaret Muza is known for her evocative tintype portraits. A tintype is a direct positive image, exposed through a wet chemical process directly onto a thin piece of metal. The process, which dates back to the 1850s, is unique in many ways, but the greatest one is that it must be developed right after it is taken. This activity is suitable for dogs and humans that can sit very still for up to 6 seconds, depending on the light. If anything moves, it will show up blurry, so please book only if that possibility doesn’t bother you. Or consider alternatives: sitting with one of your dog’s toys or favored objects, or even with a photograph of your dog.

LABYRINTH SOCIETY OF LYNDEN SCULPTURE GARDEN: GARDEN HOURS WITH JENNA KNAPP
Wednesday, September 21, 2022 – 2-4 pm
FREE
More information:https://www.lyndensculpturegarden.org/calendar/lsolsg-garden-hours-sep-2022
Artist-In-residence Jenna Knapp views the labyrinth as a physical representation of the kinds of spaces that she also holds in her coaching practice. The center becomes a place for not only individual reflection but an opportunity for connection and conversation with the community. During Garden Hours you can find Knapp at the center of the labyrinth (or up on the hill depending on the intensity of the sun) where she lends a listening ear to those who would like to be heard. Walk the labyrinth and set down some of your burdens, share your secrets with someone, or verbalize the dreams you haven’t yet brought yourself to say out loud. Insight available upon request. Or just enjoy the charged energy of a shared space, at the center of a winding path.
HOME BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP
Thursday, September 22, 2022 – 7-8:30 pm ***VIRTUAL***
FREE.
More information and to register: https://www.lyndensculpturegarden.org/calendar/2022-09
The Lynden/HOME Refugee Steering Committee book discussion group, moderated by Lynden’s Kim Khaira, is for those interested in firsthand accounts of displacement. We consider works of non-fiction and fiction, including autobiographical and semi-autobiographical works, by writers who have faced or are facing forced displacement as refugees, asylum seekers, and immigrants. Where stories of persecution, historical trauma, and loss of livelihood are effortlessly conveyed by storytellers, journalists, and humanitarians who search out or stumble upon the lives of refugees, we seek out the words of those to whom these stories belong: the narrators who are the closest to their own stories, and the stories of their people, friends, family and, of course, refugees. In September, we will be embarking on a new book, Sonya Bilocerkowycz’s On Our Way Home from the Revolution: Reflections on Ukraine. Newcomers welcome!

Fee: $25/$20 members. Pre-registration required.

Release: The Fire
Join artist-in-residence Jenna Knapp and collaborator Sevan Arabajian for the final sound bath and labyrinth walk of the season, this one in the energy of the new moon. Like a prairie after an annual burn, we are invited to see potential in the release and the blank slate that the new moon provides. Use this energy to release and imagine what needs to be rebirthed through the ash. Take some time out of your week to relax into a healing sound bath and identify what needs to be cleansed in the flame. Then, channel your intention into the candle for a sunset candle walk through the labyrinth.

Designed for children aged 4-8, we believe that reading picture books is a way to share and discuss big ideas with young children. We end each virtual session with an art activity from Lynden art educator Claudia Orjuela. Follow-up activities will be available for download. The book for September is Señorita Mariposa, written by Ben Gundersheimer and illustrated by Marcos Almada Rivero, read in Spanish and English. Scheduled to screen every third Wednesday of the month, HOME Story Time is a collaboration with the Milwaukee Public Library, the Islamic Resource Center, Hanan Refugee Relief Group, Alliance Française de Milwaukee, and Milwaukee African Women’s Association. Videos remain on view once they are posted.

COMING UP IN OCTOBER
October is a quieter month as we work on the Nohl Fellowship applications (applications are due October 6) and begin to prepare the grounds for winter. Tuesdays in the Garden continues on its weekly schedule, and we begin new 7-week sessions of the Art + Nature Labs toward the end of the month. HOME is entirely virtual in October, with a Multilingual Story Time on October 19, a meeting of the Book Discussion Group on October 20, and the first of a two-part Conversation about Forced Migration in the wake of the war in Ukraine (October 22 and November 12). Dog Day is October 15, and Chuck Stebelton’s Bird Walk is October 16, as is the fall version of our tree walk, Discovering the Urban Forest. The Bonsai Exhibit closes down at some point in October, so call ahead if you would like to visit.
