MADISON — Move over Bill Nye, there’s a new science guy! Senator Johnson is dusting off his old textbooks from the University of Minnesota to prove his hypothesis that the “jury is still out” on climate change. In an interview on WHBY Monday, Senator Johnson explained that climate change is not a big deal because it was warm in Ancient Rome and because people want to live in Florida.

Senator Johnson’s position stands in contrast to the 97% of scientists who say climate change is caused humans. But Johnson has never let facts get in the way (see sunspots or EMPs), and he’s not going to start now. In Johnson’s defense his skepticism in the face of overwhelming evidence is understandable when you remember that big oil has bankrolled his campaign.

Here’s what Wisconsinites are reading about Sen. Johnson’s climate conspiracy theories:

“Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) on Monday said he doesn’t think people should worry about finding solutions to climate change ― because historically, “civilization thrives” in warmer temperatures…Johnson made a similarly dubious argument in an interview with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel on Friday, when asked about his claim that sunspots cause climate change. Johnson also claimed that “the jury’s out” on climate change, even though virtually the entire scientific community is in agreement about the cause, the nature and the seriousness of the problem.”

‘”How many people are moving up toward the Antarctica, or the Arctic? Most people move down to Texas and Florida, where it’s a little bit warmer,’ Johnson said…The overwhelming majority of climate scientists and nearly every professional organization of scientists say climate change is real, man-made and a problem.”

“Wisconsin U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson downplayed concerns about climate change saying in a Monday radio interview, ‘mankind has actually flourished in warmer temperatures.’ On WHBY in Wisconsin Johnson used the trend of people moving to warmer states as an example, The Associated Press reported. ‘How many people are moving up toward the Antarctica, or the Arctic?’ he asked. ‘Most people move down to Texas and Florida, where it’s a little bit warmer.”’

“Johnson has previously expressed skepticism about climate change, arguing in an August interview on the Glenn Klein Show on the WRJN radio show that the planet is not warming. ‘First of all, the climate hasn’t warmed in quite a few years. I mean, that is proven scientifically. So, that’s why they’ve changed the terminology from global warming to climate change–that covers everything,’ he said.”

“Johnson also voiced his opposition to raising the federal minimum wage and mandating paid family medical leave.”

Knowledgeable people all over the U.S.A. have been laughing in their sleeves over ignorant remarks made by Ron Johnson for years. Now they are laughing out loud. Please, voters, give Russ Feingold his job back on November 8. We need a senator to replace the laughingstock who has been posing as one for nearly 6 years.
