Representative Shelia Stubbs Mourns the Passing of Legend Sims and Antwon Amos, Jr.
MADISON, WI – Following the tragic death of brothers Legend Sims, 8, and Antwon Amos, Jr., 6, who fell into a partially frozen retention pond in Sun Prairie on Friday, January 5, 2024 and subsequently passed away from their injuries, Representative Shelia Stubbs (D-Madison) released the following statement:
“Words cannot express the profound sorrow that I and the rest of this community feel at the devastating accident that claimed the lives of these two little boys, who were so full of promise and adored by everyone they met. My prayers and deepest condolences are with the bereaved family, friends, and community, especially the boys’ parents. No parent should have to suffer the immeasurable burden of grief that Legend and Antwon’s parents are currently experiencing.
While investigating this horrific accident, we have become acutely aware of safety protocol inadequacies that contributed to the situation and impeded the children’s rescue. It is time to examine not only the structures put in place to make retention ponds less dangerous, but also to examine current water rescue practices, legal standards for bystander accountability, and school bus drop-off policies. We need to find strategies for empowering our communities through organization and legislation to close some of the safety gaps that led to Antwon and Legend’s deaths and prevent future tragedies from occurring.
I will be introducing statewide legislation to address the shortfalls that made this fatal accident possible. In honor and memory of these two deeply beloved boys, I promise to use the power of my office to bring forth bills that raise awareness and deal with the glaring holes in some of our safety policies.”
