MADISON, WI – Today, Representative Shelia Stubbs joined autism advocates and autistic Wisconsinites and their families in celebration of Autism Acceptance Day at the State Capitol. Representative Shelia Stubbs (D-Madison) released the following statement:

“It was an honor to join the Autism Society of South Central Wisconsin, advocates, and Wisconsinites with autism and their families today in recognition of Autism Acceptance Day.

I would first like to acknowledge the immense amount of work that the Autism Society of South Central Wisconsin does to provide resources to all people impacted by autism.

In addition to organizing social and support groups for autistic people and their families, the Autism Society of South Central Wisconsin also provides trainings for educators, healthcare workers, and law enforcement who interact with autistic Wisconsinites, accessible vaccine clinics, and sensory-friendly recreational activities.

Autism Spectrum Disorder is the fastest-growing developmental disorder in the United States, impacting 1 in 36 kids and over 97 thousand adults in Wisconsin.

Autism is complex, it is lifelong, and it shapes the ways that an autistic person communicates, socializes, processes sensory information, and self-regulates.

Autism experiences are human experiences, and they are as unique and varied as autistic people themselves. Each and every person with autism will have different support needs, different challenges, and different triumphs throughout their lives.

It is our job as legislators, as activists, and as community organizers to continuously work to break down barriers to success and increase acceptance of Wisconsinites with autism.

We must practice and encourage autism acceptance in our schools, workplaces, and communities to achieve our vision of a Wisconsin that is inclusive and where everyone has access to employment, housing, transportation, and civic engagement.

In the words of autistic scientist and advocate Dr. Temple Grandin, ‘The world needs all types of minds.’

This month and every month, we as the State of Wisconsin will work toward acceptance and celebration of our friends, family members, and neighbors with autism and acknowledge the countless ways they enhance and contribute to our state.”
