Representative Ortiz-Velez Calls for Peaceful Demonstrations and Respect for State Sovereignty
Milwaukee, WI — In light of recent events unfolding in Los Angeles and actions taken by the federal government, State Representative Sylvia Ortiz-Velez (D-Milwaukee) is calling on residents of the 8th Assembly District, the Milwaukee community, and all Wisconsinites to continue exercising their constitutional right to protest peacefully, while standing firm in defense of state authority and local decision-making.
Representative Ortiz-Velez encouraged demonstrators to express their patriotism and unity, for Flag Day, with symbols that show the fabrics of America that bind us together. One way to accomplish that, is by flying the American flag, the Wisconsin state flag, and city flags. These are the strongest ways to celebrate Flag day, express our shared values and a commitment to building a better future for all.
“Let us show the strength of our message not through violence, property damage or looting, but through peaceful action that reflects our love for country, state, and community,” Ortiz-Velez continued. “Our state has a proud tradition of civic engagement rooted in respect, compassion, and justice.”
Representative Ortiz-Velez also expressed concern regarding President Trump’s recent order to federalize National Guard units in California, calling it an overreach that threatens state sovereignty.
“Each state — including Wisconsin — has the constitutional authority to govern its own National Guard in coordination with its governor,” said Ortiz-Velez. “The unilateral federalization of state National Guard forces, without proper consultation or legal justification, is deeply troubling and a violation of state sovereignty. We must remain vigilant in protecting the balance of powers that preserves our federal system.”
Representative Ortiz-Velez concluded by reaffirming her confidence in the people of Milwaukee and Wisconsin to lead by example in these challenging times.
