Representative Cruz Introduces the Lowering Costs, Improving Lives Package to Help Wisconsin’s Working Families
MADISON, Wis – Today, Wisconsin Legislative Democrats introduced the Lowering Costs, Improving Lives bill package to help working class families across our state. The three-bill package would reduce the financial burden for low-income renters and homeowners by expanding the Homestead Tax Credit; decrease prescription drug prices through the Less for Rx agenda; and ensure that every child in the State of Wisconsin has the right to healthy school meals to help them learn and grow.
Representative Cruz (D-Racine) released the following statement regarding the package:
Using federal reimbursements and additional state aid to fund the Healthy School Meals for All program eliminates financial barriers for families and guarantees access to school breakfast and lunch for every child.
“As a public school educator, giving healthy school meals to every child in Wisconsin, no matter their zip code, is not just a good policy, it’s personal to me. I have witnessed firsthand what school lunches being inaccessible and unaffordable can do to our children. Children who do not have access to nutritious meals have an unnecessary added barrier to learning and stigma attached to them.
To put it simply, this is a problem that can and should be solved. We can improve the lives of current families and the future generation, all the while saving money in the process. Passing Healthy School Meals for All will save the average family over $150 a month per child, combat truancy, improve student success rates, reduce childhood malnutrition, and will eliminate barriers for Wisconsin kids.”
