Representative Anderson and Senator Ratcliff Introduce Resolution Recognizing First Amendment Day

MADISON, Wis – On September 25, 1789, the Bill of Rights of the United States Constitution was approved by Congress for ratification by the States. Chief among them was the First Amendment, which guarantees the rights of the people to free exercise of religion, free petition and assembly, freedom of the press, and freedom of speech.

Today, Representative Clinton Anderson and Senator Melissa Ratcliff introduced a resolution to recognize First Amendment Day in the State of Wisconsin. Representative Anderson offered the following statement.

“The founders placed freedom of speech and expression at the very beginning of the Bill of Rights for a reason. For more than two centuries, these freedoms have guided our democracy and strengthened our communities. Wisconsin is proud to honor this legacy and remain committed to protecting it for generations to come.”

“From dance and film to poetry and stand-up comedy, the First Amendment protects countless forms of expression. These rights are central to the American story, and it is important for leaders to join together in celebrating and upholding them. By recognizing First Amendment Day, Wisconsin affirms its commitment to safeguarding freedom of expression for all.”
