Milwaukee, WI – Today, State Assembly Representative Sylvia Ortiz-Velez announces her candidacy for reelection to the 8th Assembly District.

It has been my honor to serve the people of the 8th Assembly District as their representative for the past three terms, and I look forward to continuing to serve my community. I am proud that I authored or co-authored over sixty bills that directly benefit the people in my district and that were enacted and signed into law by Governor Tony Evers.

While I have accomplished much, more still needed to be done. During this time in the legislature, I have authored legislation that increases penalties for reckless drivers and carjackers, secured funding for domestic violence victims, protected the safety of our judges and strengthened our campaign finance laws and democracy. I have co-authored historic bills for affordable housing, and bills to protect disabled, senior and blind members of our community. I co-authored legislation which permits DACA recipients to work in protected professions such as law enforcement and nursing. Most importantly, I voted in favor of the Fair Maps that Governor Evers submitted to the Court and ultimately became the law in our state. After almost fifteen years of having the most gerrymandered maps in our nation, I am proud to have fought for fair maps so that the voices of the voters can now be heard.

I grew up in Milwaukee’s south side and know the issues affecting our residents and local businesses. Their concerns are clear that crime and public safety are paramount and the need for affordable housing is a must. I coauthored a bill to legalize Fentanyl testing Strips and created Workforce Housing which helps to address affordable housing. I will continue to prioritize improving neighborhood safety and combating reckless driving, affordable housing, affordable healthcare, patient rights, affordable childcare and continue to protect our democracy and the right to vote!

Sylvia graduated from UW Milwaukee with a degree in Political Science. She was elected to the Assembly in 2020 and serves on the Housing, Judiciary, and Consumer Protection committees. Prior to being elected, she was a real estate broker and a Milwaukee County Supervisor.
