Rep. Andraca Joins Legislative Democrats Calling for Gun Safety
Majority of Wisconsinites Want Legislature to Take Action, Reduce Gun Deaths
MADISON – Today legislative Democrats and members of the Wisconsin Coalition for Gun Safety called for action on gun safety measures. Extreme Risk Protection Orders (ERPOs) and universal background checks on gun sales are overwhelmingly supported by the public. Gun Violence Awareness Day is Friday, June 3rd.
Representative Deb Andraca (D-Whitefish Bay) released the following statement:
“Year after year common sense gun safety bills are introduced in the legislature, but the vast majority of these are not even given a public hearing. At the same time polls consistently show more than 80% of Wisconsin voters support ensuring a background check on every gun sale and Extreme Risk Protection Orders. Both of these measures are in place in many other states and are completely consistent with people’s rights under the Second Amendment.
As state legislators, we have a choice: do nothing, or do something. Doing nothing guarantees more mass shootings and more preventable gun deaths. We are in the capitol today ready to get to work, and we urge Republican leaders to listen to their constituents, hold public hearings, and do something.”
In late 2019 Governor Evers called his first special session to urge the legislature to pass gun safety legislation. After Republican leaders gaveled in and out of the session in a matter of seconds, Andraca decided to run for office on a gun safety platform and defeated a 14-year incumbent in November of 2020. Representative Andraca is a licensed elementary school teacher, a gun owner, and holds a concealed carry license.

It seems that when the Wisconsin Democrats get together to protest some very major issue, the energy is a whimper rather than outrage. They need to take some lessons from Beto O’Roruke and become outrageous and loud.
