Rep. Andraca Introduces Bill to Cut Taxes for Retired Frontline Workers
MADISON, Wis. — Law enforcement officers, firefighters, forest rangers, conservation workers and other state, county and municipal employees who dedicate their lives to serving our communities deserve to retire with dignity and security. Today, Representative Deb Andraca (D-Whitefish Bay) introduced LRB 5707/1, a bill that would provide a state tax exemption for the pension payments these workers receive from the Wisconsin Retirement System (WRS).
The tax exemption will apply to the portion of an individual’s pension payment earned during service as a frontline worker or protective occupation participant. The bill provides a three year phase-in period, in which pensions will be incrementally tax exempt until 2027, when they would become 100 percent tax exempt.
This bill is part of the Building Economic Security Together (BEST) Package, policies that would ensure economic growth and personal security for Wisconsinites at every stage of life.
