MADISON — As students in Wisconsin and across the country participate in walkouts and marches to assert their right to feel and be safe from gun violence both in and out of school, Wisconsin’s Republican U.S. Senate candidates are calling for adding guns in classrooms, rather than heading the students’ calls for commonsense gun safety reforms.

Just last month, Leah Vukmir and Kevin Nicholson each endorsed arming teachers and putting guns inside classrooms — a position opposed by 56% of Americans.

Vukmir, for her part, doesn’t believe that guns are a leading factor in school shootings, at all. Instead, Vukmir insists, the real problem is “school programs aimed at coddling teens” and what she calls the “self-esteem movement.”
