Radical Crawford Would Destroy Wisconsin’s Popular Voter ID Law

By - Feb 3rd, 2025 01:54 pm

MADISON, Wis. — Wisconsin’s Voter ID law, a commonsense measure supported by a majority of Wisconsinites to ensure fair and secure elections, is once again under threat. Susan Crawford’s longstanding opposition to this critical law – and her history as the attorney seeking to repeal it – further exposes her radical, partisan agenda and willingness to undermine election integrity to serve the interests of liberal special interest groups.

As voters learn more about Crawford, they will be alarmed by her deep ties to radical, out-of-touch causes and her consistent alignment with the Democrat elites of Madison. Crawford’s past attempts to dismantle the state’s voter ID, combined with the Court’s current liberal majority signaling their desire to revisit this issue, reveal a coordinated effort to trample over the will of Wisconsin voters.

“This is not just about one candidate’s radical record – it’s about the future of fair elections in Wisconsin,” said Andrew Iverson, Executive Director for the Republican Party of Wisconsin. “Susan Crawford’s disdain for a law that is supported by the overwhelming majority of Wisconsinites can’t be hidden. If elected, it’s nearly guaranteed Crawford and the liberal Supreme Court majority will dismantle this critical safeguard and jeopardize the integrity of our elections.”

Crawford has long resented protecting Wisconsin’s elections from fraudulent activities:

  • Led Legal Efforts Against Voter ID: As an attorney at Pines Bach, Crawford actively worked to challenge and overturn Wisconsin’s voter ID law, representing the liberal League of Women Voters.
  • Compared the Popular Law to a “Poll Tax”: Crawford used extreme rhetoric equating election security law to laws that kept poor individuals and racial minorities from casting ballots.
  • Called Voter Id “Draconian”: Continuing her penchant for hyperbole, protecting voters is an excessively harsh activity to Crawford.
  • Support from Activist Judges: Crawford claims to be a fair and impartial jurist, similar to the current liberal Supreme Court majority that has shown little hesitation in legislating from the bench to advance a partisan agenda.

The last place you’d go to get assessments of fair elections is the State GOP>

Fact check: Yes, Wisconsin makes it harder to vote than almost any other state
Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Jan. 28, 2025
Looking only at voter ID laws, Wisconsin’s is one of the strictest in the country, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.

According to the Cost of Voting Index, which ranks the ease or difficulty of voting in each state based on 50-plus election policies, Wisconsin was the fifth-hardest state in the nation to vote.
Other factors besides voter ID that hurt Wisconsin’s ranking include a lack of true early voting, stringent rules for voter registration drives and no automatic registration or pre-registration.

    Solution looking for a problem.
If voter ID is THIS popular among the GOP, no wonder their policies are as dumb as they are.
    Not helping anybody.

  5. mkwagner says:

Just more projection. Its the RRRs (radical reactionary republicans) who are the biggest threat to fair elections. They have been trying to undermine our election system for more than 15 years. What’s more, their aim is not to make our elections more secure, their aim is to restrict the voting rights of anyone who might not vote the way RRRs want them. RRRs represent the forces of the oligarchic fascist elements in this country. And they certainly don’t represent the will of the majority of Wisconsinites.

  6. fightingbobfan says:

People have supported the RRRs campaign against voting because they think the “wrong” people vote.

  7. Mingus says:

Does it ever occur to Republicans that there are some voters who might want to vote for Republican candidates but they can’t because of the restrictive voting laws that the Party has put in place.

“The UW-Madison political scientist, Ken Mayer has calculated on the high end that 23,250 votes were disenfranchised by Voter ID requirements in Dane and Milwaukee Counties.

The study by UW-Madison political scientist Ken Mayer, who did not respond to interview requests, concluded 16,800 to 23,250 voters in the two counties with the highest number of Democratic and Black voters — Dane and Milwaukee counties — did not vote in the 2016 election because of the state’s voter ID law.”

Tramp ‘had’ 29,397 more Wisconsin votes. 23,250 voters in Dane and Milwaukee Counties were disenfranchised by Voter ID. 29,397 -23250=6,147. Wisconsin has 72 counties, how many other Wisconsin voters in the other 70 counties were disenfranchised by Voter ID and did not vote?

“The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel calculated that out of Wisconsin’s estimated voting population of 4.5 MILLION there were nearly 3 dozens cases of election fraud from June 2022-June 2023. That is .000008% using 36 as a total number election fraud cases with 4.5 million as the total number of voters.”

    https://www.jsonline.com/story/news/local/2024/10/30/how-common-is-voter-fraud-in-wisconsin/75920210007/

36 cases of POSSIBLE election fraud versus 23,250 voters disenfranchised by Voter ID in Dane and Milwaukee Counties. Voting is a Constitutional Right and this right is being taken away by the republicans solution in search of a problem!

  9. fightingbobfan says:

I’ve had experience trying to get my late mother an ID card, and what I discovered is that the GOP didn’t have their act together when it came to information to the DNV and how the process works.

I am self-employed and had to make three trips to the DMV until they eventually got it straight. By that time, she had died.

This “free” ID cost me in the neighborhood of $500 in billable hours.

  10. NotNotSee says:

As fightingbobfan has posted getting an ID can be expensive and time consuming. Having a January birthday and a license to renew I was at the Eau Claire, WI DMV in December. While filling out the initial paperwork I talked to a woman and expressed how hard it might be for some, especially a woman, who on marriage who took her husband’s surname, she was doubtful. We both went to turn our paperwork in to be put into the que. The guy said to her that she needed marriage licenses, divorce orders for ALL of her 3 marriages and a certified birth certificate. She didn’t know if she could get all of that! When I was with the examiner she said they has been MANY people come through their office who could not get the necessary paperwork and many who had a very difficult time attaining the paperwork. She said for some the various governmental agencies lost the records or they were destroyed by calamities. There are no exceptions, so if you can’t meet the requirements, you can’t get an ID, you can’t vote!

  11. NotNotSee says:

We hear all the time the ID is free! The ID is free!! For some people the ID is very expensive and massively time consuming if it is possible to get at all. To the people faced with hardships in getting the ID saying the ID is free is comparable to saying that the diploma awarded on college graduation day is ‘free’! The expense required to get the required documents is not free and can be quite expensive, a poll tax in wolves clothing. Voting is not a privilege, it is a Constitutional Right and any requirements, including fees for the required documents, stand in the way of this Constitutional right.

  12. fightingbobfan says:

When it comes to what the right wing wants, the sky is the limit. I’ve heard people on talk radio say, “I don’t care how much it costs to incarcerate people.”

This is a very costly solution in search of a problem, for both those having to do with the poorly-thought-out process to the millions our state has shelled out to pay for this “free” ID to attack a very minuscule issue.

The reality is that people already now how severe the penalties are for fraudulent voting. Remember some years ago when some racist crackpot put up billboards in the 53206 neighborhood reminding people of the penalties to scare them away from voting.

It’s time we cut out this nonsense.

Married Women Could Be Stopped From Voting Under SAVE Act

The Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act could prevent many married women from being able to register to vote.

The act, reintroduced by Texas Republican Representative Chip Roy, is intended to amend the National Voter Registration Act to ensure that all people registering to vote are U.S. citizens. It would require people to present in-person documentation as proof of citizenship when registering to vote.

Much of the documentation listed under the SAVE Act is based on having a birth certificate that matches the person registering to vote. However, as many as 69 million married women in the United States have changed their legal name since getting married, meaning their name does not match their birth certificate, per the Center for American Progress.

    Why It Matters
The United States is a democracy, meaning all citizens, with the exception of children and some felons, have the right to vote. The SAVE Act would make it significantly harder for married women, as well as many other members of the population, to exercise their right to vote as Americans.
