Minerva Cornejo, has been selected as the 2012 Quilted Northern Soft & Strong® Champion for the southeast Wisconsin race, which will be held Sunday, Sept. 23. She is an active volunteer with the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure® supporting the “Conversations for the Cure” initiative. As the Quilted Northern Soft & Strong® Champion, Cornejo will serve as a local ambassador for breast cancer awareness and is recognized for her dedication to Komen in her community and courage in sharing her story of survival.

“Minerva’s story encourages others to never give up in the battle against breast cancer and demonstrates how a positive attitude can make all the difference,” said Anna Umphress of Georgia-Pacific, the maker of Quilted Northern® bath tissue. “She gives those affected by breast cancer and their families hope. We’re very proud to honor her this year.”

Cornejo was diagnosed with breast cancer in May 2011, at age 38. She underwent her last surgery in 2011 and is proud to say she has been cancer-free for one year.

“I am a survivor because I was proactive with my annual mammogram screenings,” said Cornejo. “It’s my hope to help others learn that if you can detect the disease at an early stage it can save a life. When I tell my story, I think it makes a difference because people hear it from someone who has actually experienced breast cancer.”

Shortly after her diagnosis she became involved with the Komen Southeast Wisconsin affiliate and began working closely with “Conversations for the Cure” – a program developed to help those affected by breast cancer. Through this initiative, Cornejo shares her personal story with others to educate them about the importance of early detection. She is excited to participate in her second Komen race in Milwaukee Sept. 23, where she will also be honored as the Quilted Northern Soft & Strong® Champion.

The maker of Quilted Northern® has been a proud sponsor of the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure® series for nine years and is dedicated to supporting and sharing the stories of those who fight for a cure.
