Publishing Institute melds inspiration and aspiration for writers
Whether writers are beginner or well established in their careers, this two-day institute is sure to spark inspiration and may even advance careers.
MILWAUKEE (August 15, 2016) – The Publishing Institute at Mount Mary University on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1 offers resources, connections and inspiration for writers and will feature well-known writers Jacquelyn Mitchard and Dasha Kelly who both have ties to the Milwaukee community.
The Institute, which is open to writers of all genres and skill levels, begins with a Friday evening kickoff. Kelly, recently awarded the City of Milwaukee’s Artist of the Year award for 2016, will channel her storytelling techniques in performance, spoken word and written poetry for her presentation “Poets and Poetry in our World.” Saturday will feature a daylong series of workshops and critique sessions.
Highlights scheduled for Saturday include:
- First make friends – Keynote presentation by novelist, editor and writing professor Jacquelyn Mitchard on how to build and sustain a career and a life in the publishing industry. Mitchard has written 20 books for adults, young adults and children and teaches in the MFA writing program at Vermont College of Fine Arts.
- Tools for a writer’s toolbox – Breakout sessions that will touch upon a variety of topics for writers covering everything from research tips and writing advice to nontraditional paths for publishing.
- “No Excuses” writing hour – Hands-on workshop where participants will partake in an hour of poetry and flash fiction writing led by Ann Angel, the former director of Mount Mary’s graduate English program and seasoned poet Dasha Kelly.
- Time to pitch – One-on-one sessions with agents where participants have the opportunity to pitch book ideas to the publishers in attendance.
“Writing is such a solitary endeavor,” said Debra Brenegan, director of Mount Mary’s graduate English program. “The Publishing Institute allows writers to join a community of other writers to exchange ideas, develop friendships and learn writing and publishing strategies from accomplished professionals. Writers leave the Institute energized and ready to take their work to the next level.”
The event concludes with wine and appetizers, book signings and opportunities to network and socialize with other writers. Whether writers are beginner or well established in their careers, this two-day institute is sure to spark inspiration and may even advance careers.
The cost for the Institute is $80 with lunch included. For more information, visit http://mtmary/publishing-institute.
